This page shows suicide statistics for 2023 reported in Scotland in August 2024 by Public Health Scotland
- There were 792 probable suicide deaths in 2023, an increase of 30 on the previous year
- 590 males died via suicide (74.5% of the total). This was over 3 times the rate of females. This was increase of 34 compared to 2022
- 202 females died by suicide in 2023, a decrease of 4 from 2022 (25.5% of the total)
- The average age of death for suicides has increased overall, from 41.9 in the year 2000 to 46.6 in 2023.
- There were 2.4 times more deaths by suicide in the most deprived areas of Scotland than in the least deprived areas.
- Higher suicide rates in Dundee City, Highland, and East Ayrshire compared to the Scottish average. This was similar to the previous year.
